Things to do before you come to SSEHU

1.Let’s check your Japanese ability

Japanese language ability is essential not only for living in Japan but also for studying and understanding lectures and course materials at Hiroshima University. Before you come to SSEHU, let us check your Japanese ability. We will give you some good advice depending on your level.

TYPE I

Keep studying Japanese as you have done so far. We recommend some Japanese-language books to help you understand Social Studies. They are basic books that most students at Hiroshima University have read.

2. Social Studies: 300 Important Words of Fundamental Knowledge (Meiji Tosho)

TYPE II

In graduate school, there are many classes in which students need to write reports. For that, it is essential to have good Japanese writing ability. To improve your Japanese writing ability, how about keeping a journal in Japanese? However, do not worry about this too much. Hiroshima University has a Japanese-language tutoring system, and your kind tutor will check your reports and give you nice advice to help you write them.

TYPE III

Many books used in graduate school in Japan have a lot of Chinese characters (kanji). That’s why you should study kanji. Hiroshima University has some courses that can help you learn complicated Japanese grammar and kanji. How about taking one of these when you arrive? However, it will be much better to study kanji on your own before you come to Hiroshima. Japanese comics (manga) can be good for studying kanji.

TYPE IV

It will definitely be good to study Japanese more before you come to Hiroshima. You should review basic Japanese grammar vocabulary as much as you can. However, Hiroshima University has some classes for foreign students who cannot speak Japanese at all, so it will also be possible to learn Japanese after you come to Hiroshima.

*Recommended books are not just for students in Type I. If you can read these Japanese books even though you are not in Type I, it will help you understand more about Social Studies. Give it a try!

2.Let’s check your English ability

In SSEHU, you will likely have the chance to use papers that are written in English in your classes and your research. You will need to be able to read and understand them. That is why you should have good English before you come to Hiroshima University. Now, let us check your English ability; we will give you some good advice depending on your level.

TYPE I

Keep studying English as you have done it. We can recommend some books to help you learn more about Social Studies in English. They are basic books that most of students at Hiroshima University have read.

TYPE II

Your study should focus on words relevant to Social Studies.

TYPE III

Your study should focus on complicated English grammar.

TYPE IV

You should focus on fundamental English grammar and vocabulary.

*Recommended books are not just for students in Type I. If you can read these English books even though you are not in Type I, it will help you understand more about Social Studies. Give it a try!
